Great Britain sovereigns were first released in the 1600's, but those of interest to bullion buyers generally date from the mid 1800's to date. These coins were one gold pound face value until modern times. These 22 karat gold coins contain .2354 of an ounce of pure gold. The obverse pictures the head of the king or queen of England at the time of issue, and the reverse depicts St. George slaying a dragon. Many sovereigns were actually minted in a colony; these coins look alike except for a tiny mint-mark at the base of St. George on the reverse of the coin. Today, like all bullion coins, these coins are sold for the price of gold contained plus a small premium to cover the cost of manufacturing, marketing, and distribution.
