The Canadian gold maple leaf coins were first released in 1979. The obverse pictures the mature head of Queen Elizabeth II, and the reverse depicts the coins' namesake, the Canadian maple leaf . This is one of the few bullion coins produced in pure 24 karat gold. The coins come in $50, $20, $10 and $5 denomination, and contain, respectively, 1 oz., 1/2 oz., 1/4 oz., and 1/10 ounce of pure gold. Like all bullion coins, these coins are sold for the price of gold contained plus a small premium to cover the cost of manufacturing, marketing, and distribution.
